The charming and outstanding landscape with plains of heather, partly still existing in Amelinghausen and in the villages around, is notably intact and still covers relatively large areas in our region. Due to overgrazing and the fact that the soil in this area is not very fertile the heather has became the dominating plant over the years. There are two reasons for this development:
On one hand until 1800 farmers fed their cattle by driving it into the once widespread forests so that baby trees had practically no change to grow or survive. On the other hand the salt mines in Lüneburg needed vast amounts of fire wood for processing the “white gold” as the salt was called. In the past the demand for salt to preserve meat and fish was tremendously big and therefore the price was very high. Whereas the people in Lüneburg became richer and richer because of the profitable salt trade the farmers in the rural areas were very poor because of the sandy and unfertile soil and the lack of rich grass land. The forests around Lüneburg had to be cleared to provide the vast amount of fuel that was needed in the salt works. Since there was no forestry commission with a scheme of planting baby trees the clearings were left barren and gave way for the heather plant to spread.
The only way for the farmers to make a reasonable profit from the great plains of heather was to keep sheep and bees. The amount of arable land was very small and the yield from it was not very high. The “Heidschnucke” is a special breed of sheep that lives and feeds on heather, small shrubs, and poor grass. It is a small grey sheep that does not need rich fodder but produces tasty meet whereas the wool is of minor quality.
This economic, social, and historical development created a special kind of farm life and culture in the country villages of the “Lüneburger Heide” which has become part of its heritage.
The area also features many exciting activities. The region offers not only a wide range of possibilities such as relaxing and chilling out for a while but also a unique cuisine with many delicious specialities.
